Together with its sister outlet Liquid Laundry on the corner of Donghu and Huaihai Lus, Boxing Cat has helped spearhead Shanghai’s craft beer revolution in the eight years since its founding. They generally offer half a dozen of their Minhang-brewed beers on tap, including a seasonal special and a mix of pale ales, pilsners and stouts (all 50RMB each), with the lightly fruity Contender Extra Pale Ale making for an excellent session beer. The ales are broadly American in style, as are the hearty dishes on the accompanying food menu. This formula, combined with the low-key, friendly pub vibe that pervades each branch, helps put Boxing Cat’s bars high on the list of Shanghai’s go-to beer spots.
