This excellent alternative museum concentrates on the evolution of Shanghai’s various police departments since 1854.
The best of the 1,000 exhibits are on the third floor: the ‘Criminal Investigation’ section has graphic photographs of brutal murder scenes (from a woman strangled to death in a bathtub to a man axed repeatedly over the head), and there’s an excellent display of police weapons ranging from antique knives and knuckle dusters to a more sophisticated arsenal of machine guns and James Bond-esque hand guns (there’s even a golden gun!). It's hard-hitting and certainly worth a visit.
