The basement of an unmarked residential tower block just off Huashan Lu is an unlikely location for one of Shanghai's best museums. But the Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre is just that, with owner Yang Peiming drawing together a vast, fascinating collection of over 5,000 propaganda posters, many rescued from recycling centres and rubbish bins and spanning the '40s through the late 1970s.
Although small, it gives an absorbing insight into China's recent history, often ignored by the bigger museums, and is a definite must-see for Shanghai residents and visitors alike.
Note: Enter the residential compound via the Zhenning Lu entrance and the building housing the museum will be directly in front of you.
