Looking like a languorous dragon lodged in the eastern estuary of the Yangtze River, Chongming Island is a nature getaway located conveniently close to Shanghai's city centre. As one of China's three largest islands, it thrives on eco-tourism and is a national model for environmentally sustainable development.
Chongming Island sees a flat, rural landscape of fertile soil, abundant woods and marine resources, the last of which is especially evident when exploring the local markets, seafood restaurants, and protected natural areas.
As winter slowly turns to spring, now's the time to start planning a short trip here!
TIME OUT TIP: Another exciting time to visit the island is during the annual Tour of Chongming Island International Cycling Race, an elite women's road bicycle racing stage, usually held in the fall.
Getting to and around the island
🚆 Metro + Bus 🚎
Take Line 6 to WuZhou Avenue station (Exit 2) before hopping on the ShenChong bus (Line 2 or 6B), which will take you to the island's central bus station, NanPu Town Bus Station, in an hour.
🛳 Ferry
Alternatively, you can take the long, scenic route via water: the BaoBao Highspeed passenger ferry leaves from BaoShan and arrives at a port some 300 metres from Fort Town Bus station on the island's southside.
🚙 Self-driving
If you prefer the convenience of driving, cruise through Shanghai's Yangtze Tunnel Bridge. The journey should take about an hour and 15 minutes from the city centre. Some electric car charging stations are available on the way and at the major attractions listed below.
🚕 Didi or driver
You can also hail a Didi or arrange for a driver for a minimum of 300 RMB. Getting back from the island might be another issue, so try to negotiate a pick-up deal with the driver too.
🛵 Rent a scooter
Once there, it is highly recommended to rent a scooter; as mentioned above, the island is one of China's biggest.
